The New Ya Naa

Yoo Naa Abukari Mahama VII, Paramount Chief of Savelugu and Head of the Andani Royal Family has been selected as the new Overlord (Yaa-Naa) of the Dagbon Traditional Area in the Northern Region.

The 70 years old man was selected by kingmakers of Dagbon, led by Kuga-Naa and Gushei-Naa after consulting oracles of the area on Friday.

His selection followed the successful performance of funerals of the two late Overlords of the area, Ya-Na Mahamadu Abdulai (IV) and Ya- Na Yakubu Andani (II) from December 14, 2018 to December 28, 2018, and January 11, 2019 to January 18, 2019 respectively.

The performance of the funerals and the selection of the new Ya-Na were in line with the road map announced by the Committee of Eminent Chiefs that mediated the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis to restore peace to the traditional area.

Ya-Na Abukari Mahama, therefore, succeeded the late Ya-Na Yakubu Andani (II), who was murdered on the throne 17 years ago.

Report suggests that the new Yaa-Naa will move to Katini, a traditional village at Yendi, to undergo the necessary customary rites to officially assume authority as the Overlord of the Dagbon traditional area.
