AFCON 2019: Ghana at the verge of repeating history

While some Ghanaians are criticising the performances of the Ghana Blackstars, football analysts see that history which was made in 1982 where Ghana won the tournament is yet to repeat itself.

 

It’s barely 37years since Ghana senior national team won Africa Cup of Nations. The fourth trophy was taken in 1982 during the 13th edition of the tournament which was hosted by Libya.

 

AFCON 1982 History
Eight countries participated in this tournament; Libya, Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Zambia and Tunisia.

 

Ghana was drawn in a group together with Libya, Cameroon and Tunisia. First match was between Libya and Ghana and the scoreline was Libya 2:2 Ghana. In the second match, Cameroon also drew with Tunisia and the scoreline was Cameroon 1:1 Tunisia.

Ghana’s second match was played at Tripoli on 9th Match between the two giants and at the end of the 90mins the scoreline was Cameroon 0:0 Ghana. In the other match, the host nation took the visitor’s bull by its horn. The scoreline was Libya 2:0 Tunisia.

 

Ghana’s last group match was against Tunisia which was played on 12th Match in Tripoli. At the end on the match, John Essien was the only goal of the match. Hence it was Ghana 1: 0 Tunisia. In the other match, Libya and Cameroon played a goalless match.

Ghana and Libya qualified from this group as Algeria and Zambia qualified from Group B and proceeded to the semi-final.

Ghana played againgst Algeria and the scoreline was 3:2 in favour of Ghana. Libya played against Zambia and at the end of 90minutes the formal won 2 goals against 1 from the latter.

 

The final match was between Libya and Ghana on 19th March at Tripoli which ended ones. The match then went to penalty shootout of which at the eleventh hour the scoreline was Ghana 7:6 Libya. Ghana was crowned the champion as George Alhassan was the top scorer netting 4 goals.

 

AFCON 2019
Ghana is drawn together with Cameroon, Benin and Guinea Bissau in Group F.

In the first group match, it ended Cameroon 2:0 Guinea Bissau. In the second match it ended Ghana 2:2 Benin.

In the second group match which was played yesterday. It ended barren as both Ghana and Cameroon picked a point each.

 

Fans Reactions
Ghanaians who are tasty for the AFCON trophy yelled at the Blackstars and are at the verge of losing interest in the tournament because of the abysmal performances of the Ghana Blackstars in the ongoing AFCON Competition.

 

According to football analysts, based on the statistics and 1982 history, they are of the view that it is not late for Ghana to progress to the next level of the competition and to the extent of taken the tournament’s trophy.
