Asuom SHS to be connected to Solar Energy

Asuom Senior High School in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region will in the coming days be connected to solar energy taking them from the national grid. The solar Energy will be the main source of electricity for the school.

The panels meant for the exercise and their installations are to be given to the school for free by KNS solar US, an American based renewable energy company.

The total project is expected to cost about GHC45,000.

This was revealed during the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the school over the weekend.

 

Speaking with the Daily Statesman on the sidelines of the Anniversary, Chief Executive Officer of KNS Solar US, Guy Koloko, said it was an honour for the organisation to be part of the anniversary celebration and to donate to the school.

Way to go

He indicated that renewable energy is the way to go now due to its cost effectiveness and urged other organisations to consider renewable energy.

 

Country Representative of KNS Solar and an alumnus of Asuom SHS, Paul Amaning, called on the Ministries of Education and Health to consider solar energy for all schools and hospitals in the country. He stated that aside from its cost effectiveness, it will also ease the pressure on the national grid adding that it has also been proven to be the most consistent and reliable source of electricity.

Challenges 

The headmaster of the school, Francis Koomson Barnes, speaking at the anniversary celebration, highlighted some challenges in the school including understaffing, overcrowding in the girls dormitory, inadequate accommodation on campus for staff, inadequate classroom blocks among others.

 

Free SHS

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwesi Amoako Attah, who represented the President at the anniversary, used the opportunity to highlight some of the successes of the Free SHS policy. He assured the school of taking all the challenges enumerated to the appropriate offices for redress.
