PNC Confused; Mahama, Mornah fight over New Register

Mr. Bernard Mornah, National Chairman, PNC

The leader and 2016 presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Edward Nasigri Mahama, has urged his party members and Ghanaians to ignore the party’s National Chairman, Bernard Mornah.

The National Chairman joined the five other political parties that have bared their teeth to the Electoral Commission (EC) with its intention to compile a new register.

The group, the Inter-party Resistance Against New Voter Register (IPRAN), has cited costs, nearness of the registration to the upcoming elections and other reasons which many have deemed to be too shallow to be considered as the causal factors informing them to kick against the registration exercise.

At the IPRAN press conference, Mr. Mornah indicated that the PNC which he chairs is diametrically opposed to the decision to compile a new voters’ register by the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission.

False Representation

It has emerged, however, that the stance espoused by Bernard Mornah in support of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the four other political groupings does not represent the position of the PNC.

According to Ambassador Edward Mahama, his position and that of the party as was contained in a message he gave to Mr Henry Asante, a vice chairman of the PNC, at a conference held by 13 political parties is that the party supports the EC’s decision to compile a new and credible register.

”The PNC supports the compilation of a new and more credible voters’ register. All other positions apart from this one do not represent the stance of the People’s National Convention. Ignore those people” Henry Asante said on behalf of Dr Edward Mahama.

Mr. Henry Asante, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Citi FM’s Eye Witness News on Thursday, 9th January, 2020, reiterated the position of the party as directed by Dr Edward Mahama which is to the effect that the PNC is solidly behind the Electoral Commission in its decision to change the electoral register.

Superior Decision

On the same show, Mr. Mornah, though admitted that per the structures of the PNC, the 2016 flagbearer is the leader of the party, his decision to join the anti-new voter register gang stems from the party’s stance prior to the 2016 general elections in which the NPP had raised fundamental issues with the register and had called for a new register to be compiled.

Mr. Henry Asante, however, emphasized that since Dr Edward Mahama is the leader of the party, his stance supersedes that of the National Chairman and any other person in the party for that matter.

Bernard Mornah cannot, therefore, substitute the PNC’s official position with his own personal views which, by every stretch of the imagination, is borne out of his unholy alliance with the largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress.
