Mr Amoako Atta (Middle) acclaimed as the Atiwa West NPP parliamentary candidate

By Mudasiru Abdul Yakeen, Kwabeng

The Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Kwasi Amoako Atta, has asked members of the governing New Patriotic Party to make the President and the leader of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the focus of their campaign from now till December.

Mr Amoako Atta, who is also the Minister of Roads and Highways, said the party’s major priority is to stay in power, at least for the next four years, and continue with all the developmental projects and programmes initiated by the government.

“The thing is, our (MPs) winning will not be meaningful if we overwhelmingly get the majority seats in parliament and lose the seat of government. That means we have done a cos 90 job. Having said that, I entreat all of us, as party members, to campaign more for the President before we sell any MP in any constituency,” the MP stated.

No meaningful impact

Mr Amoako Atta was speaking, over the weekends, at a short ceremony to confirm him as the party’s parliamentary candidate in the area for the 2020 general election.

He stated that the work of the party’s MPs will have no meaningful impact on their constituents, should the President lose the general elections, stressing that having worked from both the minority and majority sides in Parliament, he knows what it means to always have your party in power.

“You can be an MP in Parliament, but you can’t have any meaningful impact on your constituency and constituents because you’re on the minority side. And even if you should be on the majority side without your party in power, then it is a total setback, although the latter has never happened in the country.

“Just imagine, as a majority in Parliament you win all debates and the President refuses to assent to it because you’re not his party parliamentarians,” he added.

Bragging right

Mr Amoako Atta asked party supporters in the area to ‘brag’ about developmental projects embarked on in the area, and give the praise to the President and not him, the MP.

“When you’re campaigning, don’t say Amoako Atta has done this, he has done that, but rather say President Akufo-Addo has done this and he has done that. Because without his able leadership, we wouldn’t have achieved all these developments, so tag him with all the projects you see around,” the MP said.

He added that even though he was able to implement some projects in his constituency in his early days in Parliament, the achievements made under government of President Akufo-Addo has been phenomenal.

“I want to assure you that the President has approved a district hospital for this constituency, which will be built here in Kwabeng. I have also lobbied for a new sports stadium, which will also commence very soon. There has been extension of electricity to the various communities that were deprived of it. There will be massive projects and changes in the next four years ahead of us,” he assured.
