Former President John Dramani Mahama has threatened that the opposition National Democratic Congress will not accept the results of the 2020 general elections, should the Electoral Commission go ahead to compile a new voters’ register against the wish of his party.
Addressing a gathering of party members and executives at the NDC headquarters, Adabraka, in Accra yesterday, Mr Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the party, said he finds it strange that the EC would be compiling a new voters’ register when the country will be heading to the polls in less than six months’ time.
“We are committed to a peaceful electoral process, but let nobody be mistaken because we will not accept the result of a flawed election,” he threatened.
Premature decision
Even though the Supreme Court will today determine if the EC can go ahead or not with its planned compilation of a new voters’ register, the former President seemed to have thrown in the towel and threatening the EC.
“We all await the hearing of our highest court tomorrow (today), to determine whether we’ll have a flawed election or we’ll have an election that we have confidence in and that the will of the people have been properly expressed,” he said.
The former President, who heavily suffered a loss in the 2016 elections against then candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, added that even though the NDC had participated and accepted every results of elections since the 4th Republic became, he and the party are not going to do so again.
“I wish to serve notice that we shall do all in our part to make sure that the country remains peaceful and that the electoral process proceeds smoothly. But, let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed election,” Mr Mahama warned.
He attributed the current controversy over the planned compilation of a new register to the Commission threatens the rights of eligible Ghanaian voters.
Indecisive NDC
Though some elements in the NDC say the party will still go ahead and participate in the upcoming voters’ registration, should the EC go ahead with as planned, the Chairman of the opposition party, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has charged members of the party to reject the call to participate in the exercise scheduled to begin on June 30, 2020.
He has said the NDC will not take part in the exercise because it feels it is not the right time to do so.
“We say ‘no’ to the new register and even if Parliament passes the legislation we will not accept it. We are not just against it because they will not accept the old voter card, but because the whole atmosphere in the country is not conducive,” he said.
