Afia Akoto (Landlady)
An aspiring parliamentary candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Okaikwei-North constituency, Afia Akoto, has pledged her unwavering commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in her constituency. She has vowed to champion enhanced healthcare services for party members and officials, as well as prioritize the overall welfare of all constituents.
In a statement addressing a pressing issue that has long plagued the area, Madam Akoto emphasized the importance of accessible and quality healthcare for residents of Okaikwei-North. She believes that healthcare is a fundamental right that should not be compromised and is determined to work tirelessly to ensure that the healthcare needs of the people she aspires to represent are met.
Consequently, Afia Akoto is organizing free national health insurance registration and renewals for all NPP electoral area coordinators and polling station executives in the area. The aim is to place a premium on health and adequately prepare for the tasks ahead of the party.
Healthcare drive
The drive, set to kick off on August 14 at Nana Yaa Ward in the Anorhuma Electoral Area, aims to bolster the importance of health while adequately preparing the party for its upcoming tasks.
Additional events are scheduled for August 15, targeting the Niiboiman Electoral Area at Christ Apostolic Church, and August 16, covering the Akweteyman & Achimota Electoral Areas at the Akweteyman Church of Pentecost. Another session will be held at Uncle Ato’s Residence, focusing on the Abofu & Anumle Electoral Areas.
The events are scheduled to take place from 8 am to 4 pm each day, providing convenient opportunities for constituents to participate.
Madam Afia Akoto, affectionately known as ‘Landlady’, has emphasized the significance of the initiative due to the alarming statistics surrounding healthcare spending in Ghana. The nation currently allocates an average of about six percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to healthcare infrastructure.
The latest census results from 2021 indicated that 68.6 percent of the population is covered by either the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) or private health insurance schemes. However, a significant 31.4 percent of the Ghanaian population still lacks any form of healthcare insurance.
“Seeing this worrying phenomenon and understanding the need to ensure the health welfare of Okaikwei-North New Patriotic Party Polling Station Executives and Members, I have been inspired to launch this unprecedented initiative of Health Insurance Registration and Renewals,” Afia Akoto stated.
