He said this yesterday when he met leaders of the various markets in the Greater Accra Region at Jubilee House.

Safe exercise

Hajia Alima Mahama, the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, said on March 20 her ministry, in conjunction with other stakeholders, decided to intensify education at the markets to sensitise the traders on Covid-19.

“We also took the occasion to distribute Veronica buckets, soaps, tissue papers to all markets in Greater Accra Region. Mr President, it was a success. We got total support from the market women,” she said.

The Minister also said questions raised on what was used in spraying were legitimate, and explained that what was used was Chlorine solution.

“This solution is the recommended standard of WHO for killing of viruses, including Covid-19. So we used exactly the recommended chemical,” she said.

She expressed her gratitude to the traders for cooperating during the exercise, while thanking the media also for creating the awareness before the exercise.

Disinfection continues

Later in the day, Hajia Alima Mahama announced at a press briefing that markets in the Ashanti Region will be fumigated tomorrow, all as part of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

She said the military will help to clean the markets, as some of them are dirty.

“The main aim of the fumigation exercise is cleaning the markets and clearing rubbish. There were concerns about the substance we used. Many thought it was harmful but it is just Chlorine solution. This substance, according to WHO, is used to kill viruses, including coronavirus. Spraying will continue across the whole country.”
