The lifeless body of a 22-year-old man, identified as Nicholas Bokom, has been found in an abandoned galamsey pit at Akyem Apampatia in the Atiwa West District of the Eastern Region.
Sources disclosed that the said galamseyer slipped and fell into the abandoned pit while mining for reserved gold with other accomplices around 12am on Friday night.
Police statement
According to the Acting Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Eastern Regional Police command, Sergeant Francis Gomado, the Police in Akyem Kwabeng received a call that a male adult had fallen into a mining pit at Apampatia while on search for gold leftovers.
According to a statement by the PRO, when a team of police officers rushed to the scene, they found the mining pit full of water. They therefore engaged divers who swam into the mining pit and retrieved the lifeless body of the young man.
He added that the body of the deceased was carefully inspected, but there were no physical marks of violence to suggest foul play.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has since been deposited at the CHAD morgue in Ankaase for preservation and autopsy.
