Three people were yesterday reported to have died in a tanker explosion at Onyina Nofo, in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region.

The truck driver and his assistant as well as a two-year-old boy living in the community were said to have burnt to death in the evening.

Three other children were yet to be found, according to residents who spoke to JoyNews after the accident involving the Kumasi-Tepa bound vehicle.

Eyewitnesses were quoted to have said the incident occurred after the fuel tanker lost balance, skidded into the village and exploded in the process.

About 20 houses in the community were also said to have been torched, with most residents rendered homeless.

At least, seven people who sustained various degrees of injury were sent to the hospital for treatment.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service were at the scene to bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) said they were working to provide relief items for the victims.

Speaking on Newsnight on Joy FM, the Director-General of NADMO, Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, said: “We’re going in for some mosquito nets and blankets.”

“NADMO is also coming in with some mattresses and other things to support them so that we can get them accommodation. We’re looking at the cocoa sheds, the church and the school building,” he added.
