Some 120 junior rank Police officers in the Eastern Region have gone through psychological support therapy on how to be resilient in handling personal issues. This comes on the back of what appears to be a rising suicide cases within the Service.
The refresher and promotional course organized by the Eastern Region Police Command is also expected to build the capacity of the Police officers on handling of weapons. This is to equip them with the requisite skill to fight emerging sophisticated criminal activities.
The training, which started on Monday, June 14, apart from seeking to promote the Police officers, will also update them on evolving criminal activities.
Fighting crime
Some of the short courses they were expected to be taken through include crime detection, weapon handling techniques, conducting lawful arrest, investigation, prevention of prisoner escape, code of conduct, the discipline of officers among others.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Edward Johnson Akrofi-Oyirifi, in his opening address, said the training, instituted by the Inspector General of Police, had become necessary due to the recent increase in criminal activities in the country.
He said Police officers need to arm themselves with updated knowledge and skills to enable them deal with evolving organized and sophisticated crimes. He stated that a brighter future awaited the officers if they conducted themselves very well, adding but they would be dismissed if they were found misconducting themselves.
He cited incidents of unprofessional arrests of suspects and shooting, which is gradually sinking the good image of the Ghana Police Service. He emphasized on the need for the officers to be taken through the psychological support therapy to be resilient in handling personal issues because the recent surging suicide cases among service personnel is very disturbing and needs to be addressed.
