The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has announced that its Secretary-General, Wamkele Mene, is COVID-19 negative saying result at the Kotoka International Airport was a false positive.
According to the Secretariat, a routine antigen test was performed on Mr Mene at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) upon his return from a mission outside the country, which came out positive.
A statement from the Secretariat noted that following the initial positive test result, Mr Mene took precautionary steps and went into quarantine.
“His medical team advised him to undergo further independent PCR tests. Consequently, His Excellency undertook two independent tests from two different private labs. Both independent PCR tests returned a negative result, clearing the Secretary-General of COVID-19,” it said.
“It appears that the COVID-19 antigen test that was conducted at the airport produced a false positive result,” the statement added.

In addition, it noted that almost two weeks ago, Mr Mene received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which should provide him with an additional measure of protection.
“His Excellency continues to adhere to all prescribed Covid-19 protocols,” it added.
Portions of the statement noted that Mr Mene will participate in all upcoming events which are the Inaugural Meeting of the Dispute Settlement Body Committee (DSB) meeting taking place this week as well as the meeting of Senior Trade Officials from April 29 to May 1 2021 and the Council of Minister’s meeting on Monday May 3 2021.
