The Hon. Member of Paliament for the Effutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin has donated Led street lights to Assembly members in his constituency.
The 200 LED street lights which he received from the Ministry of Energy on behalf of the people of Effutu is to help improve the security situation in the constituency.
The electoral areas which are to benefit from the street lights include Sankor Donbosco, Donkoyim, Dwoma and Ansaful which falls under the Kojo Beedu North electoral area.
The member of Parliament when receiving the items said, at night people take advantage of the darkness in these areas to commit crime. The street lights provided by the Ministry will help to improve the general security situation and also give confidence to the people as people are afraid to go out to town at night.
The MP also said the street lights will go a long way to enhance the work of the police patrol team who have been calling on government for sometime now for street lights to aid in monitoring during patrols.
He however thanked the police and the various neighbourhood watchdog committees for their hard work in helping to reduce crime rate in Effutu. He quoted the Municipal police commander to have emphatically stated that, per the available statistics over the last two years, crime rate in Effutu has gone down drastically as a result of increased visibility, the many street lights that have been fixed and increased community awareness.
He also emphasised the that the entrepreneurial drive happening in Winneba where many of the youth are now getting opportunity to do business and also to get into apprenticeship to learn their own trade has contributed immensely to the reduction in crime rate in the constituency.
He said “We are hoping that, there will be a new leadership at our University, and that leadership will provide that platform that will give opportunity to our teaming youth*.
“We still have issues with unemployment. We believe that Winneba is a University town. We believe that the University working closely with Winneba will spring up a lot of development. So far it has not been the way we expected.”
He urged the various assembly members who will have the opportunity to fix the lights at their electoral areas to put it to good use so that the members of the communities will appreciate the efforts of the government.
