The chiefs and elders of Apremdo, in the Kwesimintim constituency of Western Region, have denied calling for the comeback of Joe Mensah, former Member of Parliament for the area. They have therefore described a publication to that effect as fake and a figment of imagination of some journalists. The said publication purportedly suggested that the chiefs were calling for the former MP’s comeback has been trending on social media for some time now.
According to chiefs, no journalist was present at a recent meeting between them and the former MP where that statement was supposedly made. They have therefore threatened to summon all media houses that have published the ‘fake story’ for questioning.
The chiefs have also declared their intention to extend another invitation to Mr Mensah to ascertain from him the source of that news.
No interest
A press release issued and signed by Nana Egya Kwamina, a divisional chief of Apremdo, said the chiefs have no interest in whoever becomes the Member of Parliament for the area. The statement noted that the chiefs’ only interest is development for the area.
He added that their standing in society does not allow them to meddle in politics by deciding who should be elected Member of Parliament or not.
They maintained that the publication was in a very bad taste because Dr Prince Hamid Armah, the MP for the area, is barely four months in office and would be unfair for him to be assessed for retainment or rejection at this time.
Admitting that there was indeed a meeting between them and the former MP, the chiefs said it was just to thank him for his good works at Apremdo and the whole constituency during his four year tenure in office.
Challenge
Meanwhile, some journalists who claim that they were at the said meeting insist on having audio and visual recordings of whatever transpired and are ready to respond to summons by the chiefs whenever they are invited. They have expressed shock at claims that no journalist was present at the meeting when some of the chiefs, including Nana Egya Kwamina himself, were interviewed at the meeting.
