Martin Amidu
The president and founder of the Concerned Voters Movement, Razak Kojo Opoku, claims the real intention behind the resignation of the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, is to prepare to stage a contest against NDC flagbearer John Mahama in the opposition party’s 2022 flagbearership race.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr Amidu has resigned to prepare himself to contest the presidential ticket of NDC in 2022 ahead of the 2024 general election. So, in order to look good in the eyes of the delegates of NDC, he decided to resign three weeks to the 2020 general elections with the sole aim of hurting the chances of President Akufo-Addo and NPP,” he said.
In a statement, the CVM founder noted that while Mr Amidu’s resignation is ill-timed, it cannot hurt the chances of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the governing NPP in the December 7 general election.
“His resignation, just like the death of the late former President Rawlings, would have absolutely NO effect on the electoral victory of NPP and President Akufo-Addo.
“We can’t get everything right, but certainly the achievements of Akufo-Addo’s government shall silence the resignation of Mr Amidu,” he noted.
Lost relevance
Mr Opoku stated that the Mr Amidu’s poor attitude towards his work as the Special Prosecutor made him lose the love Ghanaians have for him and can therefore not sway anybody into believing in his antics.
“Mr Amidu should understand that 70-80 per cent of Ghanaians were hugely disappointed in him for his gross incompetence as the Special Prosecutor,” he stated.
Resignation
Mr Amidu Amidu resigned as the Special Prosecutor on November 16.
In a letter addressed to President Akufo-Addo, he sought to claim that the President had not been able to ensure his independence and freedom of action.
President Akufo-Addo, on Tuesday, accepted Mr Amidu’s resignation.
A statement from the Presidency, signed by the Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, said President Akufo-Addo had received Mr Amidu’s resignation letter and accepted same.
The President also directed the Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare, to contact Mr Amidu to resolve all outstanding matters following his resignation.
“President Akufo-Addo thanks Mr Martin Amidu for his service to the country, and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement noted.
