Commissioner of Police George Akuffo Dampare

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, to embark on terminal leave, with effect from Sunday, August 1 2021, pending his retirement from the Police Service on October 7, 2021.

Pending the appointment of a substantive IGP, in accordance with the dictates of the Constitution, President Akufo-Addo has asked Commissioner of Police George Akuffo Dampare to serve as acting Inspector General of Police with effect from August 1, 2021.

This was disclosed in a statement issued yesterday by the acting Communications Director at the Office of the President, Eugene Arhin.

Prisons

According to Mr Arhin, the President has also asked the Director General of the Prisons Service, Mr Patrick Darko Missah, to also go on terminal leave from, August 1, 2021, with his retirement from the Service set to begin on October 16 2021.

“He has, therefore, directed the Deputy Director General of the Prisons Service, Mr Isaac Kofi Egyir, to act as Director General of the Prisons Service, from Sunday, 1st August 2021, until a new Director General is appointed, also in accordance with the Constitution,” the statement read.

“President Akufo-Addo has conveyed, in person, his gratitude to both Mr. James Oppong Boanuh and Mr. Patrick Darko Missah for their dedicated and meritorious services to the nation and to the Police and Prisons Services, respectively, and wished them the very best in their future endeavours,” it added.

About Dampare

COP Dr George Akuffo Dampare has been in the Ghana Police Service for close to 30 years, having joined the service as a Constable in 1990 at the age of 20 and risen to the highest rank of Commissioner of Police, becoming one of the youngest police officers to have attained this in recent years.

During his graduation from the National Police Training School in 1991, Dr Dampare swept all the awards at stake, except the award for the ‘Best Marksman.’ Again in 1996, he emerged the overall Best Cadet for the 32nd Cadet officers’ Course at the Ghana Police Academy and won all awards, including Excellence in Professional Police Subjects and Excellence in Academic Subjects.

He has served in many leadership capacities in the Service, including Director General (Finance), Director General (Welfare), Director General (ICT), Commandant of the Police Command and Staff College, and Accra Region Police Commander. He is currently the Director General (Operations) of the Service.

COP Dr Akuffo Dampare became a chartered accountant at the age of 25 while serving as a Police Constable and currently holds a PhD in Finance.

He has been an Adjunct Lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and at the University of Cape Coast in Ghana.

Amongst his credentials, George Akuffo Dampare (PhD) was a Special Assistant to the Regional Commander, United Nations Mission in Bosnia Herzegovina, Municipal Police Commander, Cape Coast, ADC to the late Professor John Even Mills, as Vice President of Ghana, Accountant/Finance Officer, Ghana Police Service, and the Head of Police and Narcotics Desk at the Ministry of Interior.
