The National Organiser of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has asked the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to focus on putting measures in place for the 2020 general elections and stop accusing the Electoral Commission for its incompetence.
“NDC, I can confidently tell you; they couldn’t collate their results in 2016. They didn’t even know where they lost and where they won. You can’t blame the EC for your inability to open your eyes,” Mr Awuku said during a panel discussion on Peace Fm’s ‘Kokrokoo’ show.
He further refuted claims by the NDC that the EC and the National Identification Authority (NIA) are conspiring to rig the 2020 general election in favour of the governing party.
“We have never relied on the Electoral Commission since 1992. In today’s Ghana, it will be a miracle and an accident in history for the Chairperson of the EC and her Commissioners to rig the elections for a political party; it will be difficult,” he said
Allegations
Mr Awuku’s statement follows allegations by the NDC that the EC, NPP and NIA are conniving to rig the election in favour of President Akufo-Addo.
The NDC, at two separate press conferences last week, said activities being undertaken by the NIA and the EC ahead of the 2020 polls were all geared towards rigging the elections.
Both the the National Chairman of the party, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and the party’s Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, accused the EC Chairperson and Executive Director of the NIA of plotting to rig the elections.
