Deputy National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Eric Edem Agbana is calling on the current and future governments to introduce special incentives for teachers who accept posting into rural communities.

He believes the practice will help address some of the current challenges education faces in rural areas.

Speaking on the International Youth Day theme which centers on Transforming Education , Agbana said despite numerous interventions made by successive governments into the educational sector, the quality of education at the basic level especially in rural Ghana was not in good shape.

Edem Agbana Who is also the founder of the United Volunteers Network , an organization that mobilizes student volunteers as teachers in rural communities is of the view that, teachers reject postings into rural communities because of the conditions in some of these places , he therefore asked the GES and the government to institute incentives to attract young teachers to accept posting into rural communities.

He also bemoaned the state of education in rural areas saying, “we cannot talk about inclusive education without first assessing the quality of education at the basic level.”

He continued, ” Yearly the BECE results exposes how poorly we are handling basic education in most rural areas. There is something fundamentally wrong with our educational system and we must be bold in addressing it. These are issues we need a national consensus on, these are real threats to our progress as a country”.

He therefore called on the Akufo-Addo led government and other stakeholders to pay particular attention to rural education so as to be able to develop the potentials of young Ghanaians towards national development.
