Dr. Kingsley Nyarko
Delegates of the governing New Patriotic Party in the Kwadaso constituency of the Ashanti region yesterday voted Dr Kingsley Nyarko, a former Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, as their parliamentary candidate for the upcoming 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Dr Nyarko, who is also the Executive Secretary of the National Accreditation Board (NAB), polled 175 votes, beating Dr Samiu K Nuamah, the incumbent MP, who polled 153 votes, and one Vincent Frimpong Manu, who could only manage with 48 votes.
On hold
The Kwadaso constituency is one of three constituencies that the party placed a hold on their primaries.
According to the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu, the primaries in Kwadaso was suspended due to issues with the constituency’s register of delegates. Other constituencies where the party suspended their election are Gushegu, in the Northern Region, and Dormaa Central, in the Bono Region.
Constituency conferences to confirm the unopposed candidates shall be held on Saturday, June 27.
MPs fall
Dr Nyarko’s victory over Dr Nuamah extends to 41, nationwide, the number of the party’s sitting MPs who lost in the parliamentary primaries.
In the Ashanti Region alone, the government spokesperson on finance, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, lost the Bantama slot to Deputy Chief of Staff Francis Asenso Boakye; the incumbent Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Chairman of Parliament’s Government Assurances Committee, Collins Owusu Amankwah, also lost to Akwasi Konadu; the MP for Offinso South and the Chairman of Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, Ben Abdellah Banda, was defeated by Dr Isaac Yaw Opuku; while Kennedy Kankam lost to the Chief Executive Officer of MASLOC, Stephen Amoah.
Others are the Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who lost to John Kumah, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP); while Prof Joseph Quarm, MP for Manso Nkwanta, also failed to secure a second term bid.
