About 57 persons including school pupils in Kadjebi and Nkwanta South Districts of the newly created Oti Region who were partially and totally visually impaired have had their eye sight restored. The fortunate ones who had various eyes conditions due to eye related challenges   such as cataracts, Pterygiums, toses and others had their sight restored through a mass surgery carried out at the Nkwanta Government Hospital for free.

 

The free surgery, preceded a mass eye screening exercise in the two districts for some 2500 people. The exercise was carried out by the kog kriationz network, an Accra based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) whose pre-occupation is to eliminate avoidable blindness by way of education and exercises as such. Out of the number screened a total of about 1300 people received eye glasses and drops depending on the condition and state of one’s eye.

The mother of a nine-year-old basic school pupil in the Kadjebi District who benefited from the exercise could not hold back her tears of joy as she was full of praise to the Kog Kriationz Network for making it possible for her daughter to regain her sight. She said that having regained her sight, the young girl can now start her schooling.

Dr. Seth Wanye, who led the team of experts to carry out the surgery advised beneficiaries to adhere to good practices that will always keep their eyes in good condition.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, the chief executive officer of kog kriationz network, Mr Eric Owusu Gyimah said the project is an annual one which has so far been in all the regions except Upper East. He said, he was touched by the devastating rate at which young people have been dropping out of school and some adult becoming liability to society due to eye related challenges hence the move to help arrest the situation.

Mr Owusu Gyimah hinted of a similar project in the northern region in July as he expressed his profound gratitude to the Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, Eye foundation of America, Oheneba Kasempa Enterprise (Original Abensuo), Friends Eye Centre and the kog Kriationz Network team for solidly being behind the project for the past years. He called on other corporate organizations to also put their hands on the wheel in order to heal eliminate avoidable blindness since according him the eye is window to the human body.
