Electricity has been reconnected to Akwatia Ghana Consolidated Diamonds (GCD) Limited and surrounding communities after close to two years of being in darkness. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) reconnected the area to the national grid this week.

The company and its surrounding communities were disconnected in November 2017 by GRIDCo due to unpaid electricity bill amounting to about a million dollars.

The reconnection follows the takeover of the company by government from the Great Consolidated Diamonds Ghana Limited (GCDGL), a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies.

The government through the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) took over the company from GCDGL in September this year. This is as a result of the inability of the management of GCDGL to turn around the fortunes of the company after almost eight years since it was sold to them. An Interim Management Committee (IMC) has been constituted to run the company while the government looks for new investors.

The people of Akwatia have since expressed their appreciation to the government for the take over and the reconnection. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Dr. Joseph Amuzu, President of Akwatia Development Association (AkDA), thanked the president for the bold decision to take over the company. He expressed the readiness of the association to support the IMC to achieve their aim of revamping the company and getting investors for it.

Restocking of GCD Hospital

The Association expressed hope that the IMC would live up to expectation. Meanwhile, GCD hospital, a hospital owned by the company, according to the Association, has also been restocked with medicines and hospital equipment by the IMC.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is however expected to visit the company on Sunday as part of his working tour to the Eastern Region.
