The Kumasi Central Market has been closed down today, April 7, following the actions of some recalcitrant traders who have refused to adhere to the World Health Organisation’s social distancing protocol in the wake of the novel Coronavirus pandemic.
According to Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Security Council, reports indicate that traders in the market are blatantly disregarding the measure.
The press statement signed by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, noted that the scary nature of the report warranted an emergency security council meeting with the all stakeholders. The stakeholders include the 11-member Kumasi Central Market Committee and leaders of the 67 trade associations whose members operate in the market.
Agreement
“After a lengthy deliberation of the effect of the actions of some recalcitrant traders, it was unanimously agreed that the market should be closed. By this release, we want to inform the general public that the Kumasi Central Market shall be closed on Tuesday, 7th April, 2020 to enable the leadership reorganize themselves into groups,” the statement emphasised.
However, leadership of the traders are to meet and set modalities for the rotation of the various groups, and update the security council accordingly.
The statement further cautioned that trading along the margins of the road at the market and the Central Business District, at large, is still prohibited.
