The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has ordered for immediate stop to the use of lorry tyres in preparation of meats by some butchers in the country.
According to the minister, the use of lorry tyres has implications on the health of human beings. She has therefore instructed sanitation inspectors in the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to ensure that commercial butchers use laid down processes in the killing and preparation of their meats.
The minister was speaking at Old Fadama when she paid a working visit to the place on Tuesday. Ms. Dapaah who was not happy with the sanitation situation of the area and the use of lorry tyres by butchers instructed the Environmental Health Personnel in the municipality to ensure that the right procedures are used by the butchers while the environment are kept clean.
The visit took the minister to the Ablekuma North, South and Central Assemblies where she interacted with various stakeholders.
Commendation
She praised the management of the Ablekuma North and South District Assemblies for ensuring and enforcing sanitation regulations in the area. She expressed happiness about the sanitation situation she encountered at Mallam Market and Odorkor Lorry Station. These two places in the capital have been regarded as some of the dirtiest areas in the Greater Accra Region but seem to be changing the narrative recently with the handling of their filth.
Cleanest City
She used the opportunity to remind residents of the communities she visited about the President’s commitment to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa before 2020. She urged all residents of those places to make conscious effort in helping the President achieve this dream.
She added that her ministry will continue to facilitate policies and programmes that will make the vision come to pass.
“It is as a result of the commitment by the government to have this feat achieved that is why rubbish bins are being provided throughout the communities to ensure that refuse are collected and disposed properly”, she said.
Tour
She revealed that the visit to some areas in the Greater Accra region is part of a planned nationwide tour by her ministry to propagate the Clean Ghana agenda.
Ms. Dapaah was accompanied on the tour by the Deputy Minister for Sanitation, Patrick Yaw Boamah
