The women’s wing of the governing New Patriotic Party has expressed its appreciation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for appointing close to 30 per cent of women in his government so far.
It has also expressed optimism that “many more women would be considered in subsequent appointments such as CEOs, Deputy CEOs, MMDCEs, among others”.
According to a statement released over the weekend by the NPP’s National Women Organiser, Kate Gyamfua, this shows the President’s “continuous belief in women, especially young women.”
Women appointed
President Akufo-Addo has appointed five female sector ministers, two regional ministers and 10 deputy ministers.
This represents 17 female ministers and deputy ministers. Together with the Chief of Staff and other presidential staffers, the number of female appointees in the government is a little above 25 per cent. Though this falls short of the anticipated global mark of at least 30 per cent women in all levels of governance by 2030, Ms Gyamfua believes this is a step in the right direction.
“The Ghanaian women have, at all material times, proven to be competent enough to handle such portfolios and deliver in the interest of the country. I therefore have no shred of doubt that these appointees will perform par excellence,” she said.
She called on the appointees “to help the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection push the Affirmative Action Bill which has been on my heart for some time now.”
