Franklin Cudjoe

The founder of policy think tank Imani Africa, Mr Franklin Cudjoe, has observed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is understating its achievement by scoring itself 78 per cent.

According to Mr Cudjoe, the government has done more on the economy and infrastructure than it has highlighted.

This is in sharp contrast to his own organisation’s score of 48.78 per cent for the government’s performance with regard to the fulfillment of its 2016 manifesto promises.

Though the think tank scored the government 54.35 per cent for how it has managed the economy in its 2019 Imanifesto report, it scored the government 48.78 per cent for its overall performance.

President disagrees

Its score was, however, challenged by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who stated that his government had achieved 72 per cent of the promises it made in 2016.

“I disagree with the 48 assessment by IMANI. I think we deserve much higher. We are looking at 72. We have a fundamental disagreement with that rating. Our figure is the one we are working with and it’s the right one,” the President noted at his 3rd encounter with the media in Accra in December last year.

78% achievement
However, speaking at the government’s Townhall Meeting and Results Fair, which is focused on updating Ghanaians on the fulfillment of its promises and commitments ahead of the 2016 elections, Vice-President Bawumia scored the government 78 per cent.

He indicated that the Akufo-Addo government has achieved 78 per cent success of the 388 manifesto promises it committed itself to in 2016.

Taking the audience through the challenges the nation faced at the time the government took office, he said the NPP government has tackled them head on.

Understatement

Contributing to a television discussion on the Vice-President’s submission, IMani Africa’s president said the government has done more than what Dr Bawumia presented on Tuesday.

The therefore encouraged the government to revisit the Imanifesto, which, according to him, shows more achievements.

“If you look at the area of the economy, for instance, we at IMANI believe government has done fantastically well and that ought to be highlighted,” he said.

He indicated that there were significant commonalities between the Imanifesto work his outfit did in tracking government performance and what the government did.

Mr Cudjoe added that, apart from the economy, the government has done more in the area of infrastructure than it highlighted.

“I think they [NPP] have done far better in infrastructure than they think they have,” Mr Cudjoe noted.
