The Women’s Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched “Operation Win Your Polling Station, Win Your Constituency ” to help the party secure a majority of parliamentary seats, and win the presidential election in the upcoming December 7 polls.
The operation was jointly launched by Samira Bawumia, Second Lady, and Kate Gyamfua, National Women’s Organiser of the NPP, on Saturday, September 27, 2024, at the Akwatia constituency during the 2024 Eastern Regional Women’s Wing Conference of the party.
Addressing the gathering before the launch, the National Women’s Organiser called for unity within the party, urging all members to let go of differences, and hit the campaign trail. She personally apologized to individuals within the party who might have been offended by her actions, assuring that she, too, had forgiven everyone who may have offended her.
Apology to Ama Sey
She specifically apologized to Ms. Mercy Adu-Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Sey, the former NPP MP for Akwatia, calling on her to let sleeping dogs lie and join the campaign.
The former NPP MP stayed away from the party’s campaign since 2020, following her loss in the party’s primaries. Her supporters attributed her defeat to Ms. Gyamfua, though the allegation was not substantiated.
However, Ms. Gyamfua emphasized that this was not the time for party members to trade blame or accuse and defend each other. She noted that the party was at a crossroads, and needed all of its members on the campaign field. She urged Ama Sey to let the past remain in the past, and join the party to present a united front ahead of the elections.
Ms. Gyamfua also pleaded with supporters in the Akwatia constituency to work hard to help the NPP recapture the seat, which it lost in 2020.
Zongo Support
Ms. Gyamfua further called on residents of the various Zongo communities in Ghana to join the party to secure victory for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer. She noted that this was the first time someone who traced his roots to the Zongo communities was vying for the highest office in the land, urging residents in these communities to support Dr. Bawumia.
She noted that Dr. Bawumia had used his position as Vice- President for the benefit of people in the Zongo communities, and assured them that the NPP flagbearer would even do more if he aascends to the presidency.
Ms. Gyamfua acknowledged the rising cost of living in the country, but stated that Dr. Bawumia had demonstrated the ability to tackle the challenges, which were largely the result of exogenous factors.
The Operation
Throwing more light on “Operation Win Your Constituency,” Mrs. Bawumia emphasized that the party’s focus is to win a majority in Parliament, and secure a one-touch victory in the presidential election. She pointed out that this could only be achieved if all party members committed to convincing Ghanaians of the party’s promises.
She charged all party members to engage Ghanaians in every corner of the country, and use every opportunity to speak positively about the party.
The Second Lady also praised the virtues of the NPP flagbearer, urging Ghanaians to give him the mandate to serve the interests of the citizens. She appealed to residents of the Akwatia constituency to fully support Ernest Kumi, the NPP candidate for the area, to recapture the seat for the party.
