The governing new patriotic Party has hinted that it will carry out to the letter the agreement signed with all aspirants who contested in the parliamentary primaries, by using all available means to prevent any of them from contesting the 2020 parliamentary election as independent candidate.

The Eastern Regional Secretary of the party, Jeff Konadu Addo, who hinted this, said the party would use all persuasive means to stop anybody who harbours such idea.

Pact

The NPP signed a pact with all parliamentary candidate aspirants that barred them from contesting as independent candidates, or on the ticket of any other political party, should they lose the parliamentary primaries.

The pact, which was in the nomination forms that were sold to the aspirants, said the party would do everything possible within its mandate to resist any defeated parliamentary aspirant who would decide to go independent.

Under the heading “Contractual Undertaking by Prospective Parliamentary Candidate”, the parliamentary hopefuls were made to undertake, by signing, that they shall not offer themselves as independent candidates, or contest the parliamentary elections on the ticket of any other party, for the purpose of the 2020 election.

They also signed that should they breach the said undertaking under any circumstances, the party reserves the right to restrain them, using any available legal means.

Addressing a press conference at the regional secretariat in Koforidua on Tuesday, the Regional Secretary said the party had engaged with all candidates before and after the election on the issue of independent candidature, as it might emanate, adding the party would enforce to the letter, the pact signed with the candidates.

Voters’ registration

Meanwhile, Mr Konadu has sent a strong warning to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to do anything untoward that will thwart the Electoral Commission’s decision to compile a new voters’ register.

The EC has set Tuesday, June 30, to commence the compilation of a new voters’ register.

According to the NPP regional secretary, the government is prepared to give the exercise the needed security it requires, warning that it would not allow any individual or group of persons to derail the peace the country is enjoying, hiding behind the exercise.

“I am sounding a word of caution from the Eastern Regional branch of the NPP to the NDC who have planned to disrupt the registration exercise that we will make sure that the laws are being used to help the EC organise a successful voters’ registration exercise in the region. If they bring any misunderstanding, we will also not understand. As long as EC is going by the laws of the country, we will also support it,” he stated.

“We have heard the incompetent John Mahama saying that he will cancel Free SHS when given the mandate again. So, I am pleading with parents to engage themselves in the upcoming registration and register their names so they can protect their wards from the bad intentions from Mahama.

“While we register, we should make sure that we vote massively for the NPP and Nana Akufo-Addo for him to continue the good work he is doing for the country,” he added.
