Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will today, Monday January 10, 2022 outdoor a media capacity enhancement programme in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, for media practitioners.

The programme, according to the Ministry of Information, is designed to provide scholarship for some 250 journalists to be trained annually. It is also aimed at contributing to deepening media professionalism nationwide.

This was contained in a press release signed by Munira Karim, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Information.

She stated that the programme forms part of collaborative efforts by stakeholders in the media industry to support the sector, which has been challenged in recent times.

Mrs. Karim noted that the needs assessment, curriculum and faculty were agreed upon by an independent working group of experts led by Prof. Kwabena Kwansah-Aidoo, Rector of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The Asantehene, she said, would be performing the opening ceremony at Manhyia Palace after which the training programme will begin.

According to her, the ceremony will be televised live on Ghana Television and other private media platforms across the nation as well as the Ministry of Information’s social media handles.

Programme focus

It is anticipated that the programme will help position the media to effectively play its watchdog role in order to help consolidate Ghana’s democracy for national development.

Some of the specific objectives of the programme include the improvement of quality and effective reportage, increase professionalism in the conduct of media personnel and media houses, awareness and increased desire in skills in how to hold duty bearers accountable.

It is also expected that the programme will benefit a host of media practitioners, including reporters, correspondents, commentators, producers, directors, social media executives, anchors, editors, programme directors, production teams, among others.
