The Kaneshie and Tema Police commands have gunned down three suspected robbers in two separate operations.
One was gunned down at the Awudome cemetery in the Greater Accra Region by the Kaneshie Police Command.
This was after the deceased and his accomplice had stabbed and robbed a passer-by in the area. A second attempt by the robbers to rob another commuter was foiled by a police intervention.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 8:30 pm on Friday, March 12, 2021.
The robbery victim was said to be trekking along the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) building, heading towards the Obetsebi Lamptey Circle, when he was attacked by two robbers.
Police also narrated that the suspects allegedly stabbed their victim in the neck with a knife and as well robbed him of a black bag containing spare parts, mobile phone and cash of GHC250.00.
The Police recounted that the victim bolted to the nearby police post for assistance but there was no trace of the robbers after the police combed nearby bushes.
Awudome shooting
The Police further explained that the team upon arrival strategised and laid ambush until the robbers resurfaced from the Awudome cemetery in an attempt to rob another target.
According to the Police, one of the suspected robbers, believed to be in his early 20s, was shot but the other managed to escape.
He was rushed to the police hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead and the body has since been deposited at the mortuary for identification and autopsy.
Tema shooting
In a related development, two robbers were also gunned down in Tema after stealing over GHC100,000 from their victim on Thursday. The robbers were said to have trailed their victim, who had gone to cash the said amount from the Tema Community One branch of the Zenith Bank.
Tema Regional Crime Officer of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Paul Kissi Frimpong, said luck eluded the two robbers after the Police patrol team pursued them until they were killed in a fire exchange.
“A robbery took place in Tema here. A businessman had gone to Zenith Bank to withdraw over GHS100,000. As they left the bank, these two robbers on a motorbike who chased him, immobilized his vehicle by shooting at the tyres; then succeeded in taking his money away,” he said.
ASP Frimpong said an alarm was raised and the information got to the Police. The patrol team then pursued them and eventually had the two killed in an exchange of fire. “The money also scattered on the street. People had to scramble for the money so eventually we had only GHS2,500 out of the 100,000 cedis,” he explained.
