Samira Bawumia (2nd right) presents some books to some staff and students of Apimpoa Islamic Basic Schools

Second Lady Samira Bawumia, through her non-profit organization, the Samira Empowerment and Humanitarian Project (SEHP), has presented educational materials to some basic schools in the Eastern Region, as part of the organisation’s support to boost education in the country.

The donation was made under the “Library in a Box” project, a flagship programme of SEHP.

The beneficiary schools included Effiduase Presbyterian School, Oyoko Methodist School, Police Basic School, Trinity Presbyterian School, and Apimpoa Islamic Basic Schools in the New Juaben North and South Municipalities.

The schools received storybooks, textbooks, notebooks, and exercise books to help cultivate the habit of reading in schoolchildren.

Reading habit

Mrs Bawumia, who is also an advocate for literacy and critical thinking, noted that she believes in encouraging love for reading among people of all ages, hence the project.

“I believe that cultivating a habit of reading is important and will serve as a springboard for our pupils to excel.

“Through this donation, we want our children to learn to cherish good books, to read as often as possible, and to enjoy reading as a constructive way of spending their time,” she said.

She also urged headteachers to institute measures that will encourage reading among young people in their schools.

“There are all sorts of ways you can do this, from allotting reading periods on timetables to getting older pupils to read to younger ones, to inviting community leaders to school assemblies to talk about how important reading has been in their lives and also read to them. It is also important that you form reading clubs in your various schools,” she said.

Ahead of the donation, the Second Lady paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III.
