A former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, has strongly endorsed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, praising him as an authentic and trustworthy leader whose character remains consistent both in public and private life.
Speaking during Dr. Bawumia’s visit to Akuapem North as part of his tour of the Eastern Region, Awuku lauded the NPP presidential hopeful for what he described as an unwavering commitment to honesty in politics.
He noted that while some individuals adopt an affable posture only when seeking political office, Dr. Bawumia has “never pretended for political gain,” a trait he believes sets him apart in Ghana’s political space.
Stranger tag
Awuku, who has worked closely with the former Vice President for years, argued that attempts by critics to label Dr. Bawumia as a “stranger” within the party are misguided. He stated that if a seasoned Vice President with years of service to the NPP could be branded as such, then individuals with far less political exposure would face even harsher scrutiny.
His remarks came as Dr. Bawumia intensifies efforts to secure the NPP flagbearership for the 2028 general elections.
The former Vice President has been touring Akuapem North, Akuapem South, and Okere, engaging delegates and energising party structures ahead of the January 2026 primaries.
Regional Tour
The Eastern Region tour has attracted a wave of endorsements from both party executives and grassroots organisers. Constituency chairmen Dankwa Peter Addo (Akuapem South), Omane Mensah Bonso (Akuapem North) and Justice Yaw Mensah (Okere) publicly described Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s most “marketable” and “formidable” candidate for the 2028 polls.
Former Okere MP Brandford Kwame Daniel Adu also threw his support behind the former Vice President, urging party members to rally behind him.
Grassroot Enthusiasm
At the grassroots level, enthusiasm has been equally strong. In Akuapem North, 29 out of 31 electoral area coordinators pledged to work closely with polling station executives to mobilise massive support for Dr. Bawumia.
Dr. Bawumia’s tour— characterised by what observers describe as “electric” receptions —marks a strategic push to consolidate regional support as he positions himself as the party’s most prepared and unifying choice for 2028.
