The Ghana Police Service has disclosed that some 406 persons have been arrested while 103 are in custody and 14 processed for court for violating the lockdown directive and the ban on public gatherings.
Speaking at a press briefing organised today by the Information Ministry to update the public on Ghana’s status of the novel coronavirus, Head of Legal and Prosecution, Accra Regional Police Command- ACP Lydia Donkor, said although the directive has largely been adhered to, there are other recalcitrant ones who try to flout the order.
To this end, she used the opportunity to advise the public to comply with the lockdown and ban on public gatherings but warned that those who disobey the directive will be dealt with in court in accordance with the Imposition and Restrictions Act.
“If you are arrested and after successful investigation, you are prosecuted and found guilty, you are likely to pay a fine of ranging from GHC12,000 to GHC60,000 or to a term of imprisonment of four years to 10 years or both,” she added.
Regional breakdown of arrests
According to ACP Lydia Donkor, 161 arrests have been made in the Greater Accra Region while Ashanti Region records 70 arrests.
“Sixty-seven people have been arrested in the Volta Region. Western Region, Eastern Region, Tema – 31, Bono Region –20, Northern Region, Central Region –24, North East Region – 1, Upper East Region – 8, Upper West Region – 2 and the Western North Region – 8,” she said.
