The Omanhene of New Juabeng Traditional Area, Daasebre Prof. (Emeritus) Oti Boateng has called on various chiefs in the country to join the campaign for the upcoming referendum on the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives.
According to Daasebre, this is the only way that Ghana can boast of a true Decentralization. He stated that if the people are wise enough to elect president and Members of Parliament, then they should be considered wise enough to elect their own mayors. Adding that giving the opportunity to the people to elect their own mayors mean truly given power to the people.
He has therefore availed himself for a national debate on the need for MMDCEs to be elected.
Daasebre Oti Boateng was speaking at the launch of GHANA SECONDARY CITIES SUPPORT PROGRAM (GSCSP) held at Koforidua on Tuesday 7th May.
GSCSP
The GSCSP is aimed at “Improving Urban Management & Basic Urban Services for Resilience” in 25 participating Municipalities.
It is also to support government’s National Decentralization Action Plan (NDAP) to ensure effective and efficient management of urban centers and create jobs for the youth in the participating cities.
With the GSCSP, Ghanaians living in participating municipalities will have
access to efficient urban services such as better roads, education, health care, reduced flooding, employment generation and a generally well built and planned environment.
Referendum
Ghana will go to the polls in November this year to vote on the need to elect MMDCEs or not.
The minister for local government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama speaking at the launch wooed District Assembly Members who are campaigning for re-election to consider the referendum as part of their campaign messages. The referendum will be held on the same day that new District Assembly members and Unit Committee Members will be elected this year.
Traditional Leaders Support
Some Traditional Leaders have expressed their ultimate support for the decision by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-addo government.
Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the king of the people of Akyem Abuakwa has not relent in using every given opportunity to rally for support for the decision.
His recent pronouncement was made at Suhum Omenako during the launch of the Ghana Medical Drone project.
The latest chief to join the campaign is the New Juabeng Omanhene who is calling on other chiefs to join the campaign.
