Accra markets choked with filth just right the lift of lockdown ban, the most affected places are the Makola, CMB, Agbogbloshie and Kaneshie markets.
The President of the Republic,Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo – Addo, on Sunday, 19th April, 2020 ,announced the lifting of the restriction to movements of persons in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and Kasoa, the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area and its contiguous districts.
During the lockdown, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, together with other ministries, such as the Local Goverment and Rural Development Ministry led by Hajia Alima Mahama as well as Zoomlion and Military task force were seen distinction and cleaning the various markets and gutters.
Angel News Reporter Kwadwo Baffour visited Accra’s popular markets yesterday and the markets have become engulfed with filth,flies and pungent smell. The markets are also inundated with plastic waste, decayed food crops and choked gutters.
Most of the traders Angel News spoke to lamented the poor sanitation situation at the market just few days of the lifting of lockdown ban.
Most of the gutters infront of these markets are filled with rubbish, making it extremely difficult for water to flow. The place has,therefore become a breeding ground for mosquitoes,mice and cockroache.
The worst part of it is that food vendors ,fishmongers, vegetables and other food items traders sell by these filth, a situation which can easily lay the foundation for cholera,fever, malaria and other diseases outbreak.
