The head communications at the Bright Senior High School, a private Senior High School at Akyem Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region, Dr Isaac Asare, has asked organisers of the National Maths and Science Quiz (NSMQ) to consider adding private schools to the prestigious competition.
According to Dr Asare, the private schools in Ghana equally have some brilliant students who, given the needed opportunity, can excel on such national platforms, hence the need for their inclusion.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Statesman over the weekend, Dr Asare stated that the NSMQ is improving the standards of education, particularly Mathematics and Science education, in the country, adding that for equal distribution of access to such national facilities, no school should be left behind.
“We are asking that, if it is possible, private schools must be involved so that our students can also get the opportunity to showcase their talents as well as their knowledge in that area,” he stated.
Sponsorship
The appeal follows a sponsorship package presented to the organisers of the NSMQ by the school. The sponsorship, which is in a form of payment for television airtime, according to management of the school, is to help expand the reach of the programme.
“The National Maths and Science Quiz is remarkable, and it is incumbent on all Ghanaians to promote it through whichever means. It is the reason why, though we are not included in the competition, we have decided to support in expanding it reach,” he said.
He noted that students in the country learn from the competition and, thus, it is important that it reaches all part of the country so that no Ghanaian child is denied the opportunity of learning from the programme.
The NSMQ is scheduled to begin with the preliminary contest this week, and will be climaxed on October 8, as various Senior High Schools compete for the cash prize and the bragging right of winning the contest.
The NSMQ 2020 was postponed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, but was relaunched on Tuesday, September 1, in Accra.
