Following the resignation of Mr Martin ABK Amidu, some Ghanaians have been questioning whether the special prosecutor’s move is a ‘smart way’ to prepare himself to contest the opposition NDC’s flagbearer slot ahead of the 2024 general election.

Founder and President of Concerned Voters Movement (CVM), Razak Kojo Opoku, today, alleged that Mr Amidu’s resignation is to prepare himself to give Mr Mahama a contest in the NDC’s flagbearership race in 2022.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr Amidu has resigned to prepare himself to contest the presidential ticket of NDC in 2022 ahead of the 2024 general election. So, in order to look good in the eyes of the delegates of NDC, he decided to resign three weeks to the 2020 general elections with the sole aim of hurting the chances of President Akufo-Addo and NPP,” Mr Opoku wrote.

Another write-up circulating on social media also noted that “Credible information available indicates that John Mahama will have to fight off a keener but bloody internal challenge of protracted bickering from the former Attorney-General Martin Amidu in the flagbearership race of the National Democratic Congress ahead of 2024 elections.”

Meanwhile, some sources within the NDC have said “Martin Amidu, together with other game changers in the NDC, has realised the slim chance of the NDC in the upcoming general elections particularly with John Mahama as flag-bearer and therefore the need to strategise after the 2020 defeat and Martin Amidu has been tipped to lead the party after John Mahama’s second defeat.”

Already some social media activists have been questioning whether the former special prosecutor indeed has an eye on Ghana’s covetous presidential seat.
