Some coaches of the Ghana Flying Disc Association (GFDA)
The Ghana Flying Disc Association (GFDA) over the weekend hosted training workshop at the Nungua Town Park in Accra for its coaches.
The objective was to enhance the technical knowledge of the current coaching body on all aspects of the Ultimate Frisbee game and the GUTS game.
The workshop also gave youth athletes the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the various aspects of the game of Ultimate and GUTS.
The workshop was facilitated by volunteer coaches from the USA, and was attended by over 30 coaches from the Greater Accra Regional Flying Disc Association, Western Regional Flying Disc Association and the Eastern Regional Flying Disc Association.
Over 100 youth athletes, between the ages of nine and 25, participated in the workshop.
The president of the GFDA, Mr Desmond Mantey, in his remarks, pointed out the need for the coaches to ensure that they put to use the necessary skills they had acquired and make them available to the youth within their communities so that the overall objective of the workshop would be attained.

He further emphasized that the ultimate aim of the GFDA is to create the platform for youth development through the flying disc sport.
He stated that it is therefore essential that Ghana has trained coaches to help achieve that goal.
Mr Troy Duffield, a member of the GFDA technical department and a facilitator at the workshop, also reiterated the need for coaches to ensure that the game is enjoyed by all for fun as well as for competition within their community. He further pledged his support towards the development of the coaches in the coming months and years.
Mr Greg Morrison, a facilitator, also stressed the need for coaches to see to it that girls are given equal opportunity to participate in the game. He added that the game is more likely to gain grounds in Ghana if girls and women are given an equal chance to play and further tasked the coaches to ensure this.
Madam Fumi Sakon, a facilitator from Japan, pledged her support towards training of female coaches, while Mr Derrick Lyndes, an experienced player and facilitator from the USA, affirmed that support.
Madam Augustina Fuga, a CAF referee who participated in the workshop, expressed her delight for the rare opportunity to introduce the game in communities.
Chairman of the Greater Accra Flying Disc Association, Mr Samuel Cobbinah Abraham, expressed appreciation to all the participants for their support.
“The GFDA overall agenda of promoting the flying disc game in Ghana is on course and our next agenda is to stage the 2nd GFDA International Exhibition Tournament in Nungua on the 20th of November 2021. The association is most grateful for the support from our expatriate coaches who have been instrumental in the training of our coaches and the development of our athletes.
“The association is further calling on all stakeholders to come on board and support the agenda to promote the flying disc games in Ghana while using sports to address the SDG’s for sustainable socioeconomic development in Ghana,” he said.
