The Volta River Authority (VRA), in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has stepped up efforts to offer vital support to communities adversely affected by the ongoing spilling of water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.
The relief items, aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by the affected communities, were presented during ceremony in Adidome, Volta Region, yesterday. They included mattresses, blankets, various food items, clothing, and toiletries.
These essentials were presented by Ing. Ken Arthur, the Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Services at the VRA, symbolizing the Authority’s commitment to support those affected by the situation.
The VRA, known for its commitment to community well-being and environmental responsibility, has been closely monitoring the spill situation that has impacted numerous communities in the lower Volta Basin. As a response to the heightened spill rate, the Authority deemed it necessary to provide essential relief items to those in need.
Present during the presentation were the Municipal/District Chief Executives of the Central Tongu, North Tongu, Keta, and Anlo Districts.

The Director General of NADMO, Eric Nana Agyemang Prempeh, received the relief items on behalf of the affected communities, and expressed gratitude for the VRA’s swift response to their needs. He recognized the crucial role that collaboration between public and private entities plays in addressing disaster-related challenges.
The VRA initiated the controlled spillage on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir. In accordance with their emergency preparedness plan and standard operating procedures, the authority promptly informed its stakeholders, including the downstream communities, about the planned spill.
The VRA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with NADMO and other stakeholders to continuously monitor the situation and provide regular updates to the general public.
This collective effort reflects the dedication to minimizing the impact of the ongoing spill exercise on the affected communities and demonstrates the sense of responsibility the VRA has for the well-being of the people it serves.
