Ghana’s Minister for Energy, alongside key officials from the Volta River Authority (VRA), administrators of the Akosombo and Kpong Hydroelectric Power Dams, is scheduled to appear before Ghana’s Parliament on November 8, 2023. The purpose of this appearance is to provide a briefing on the Akosombo Dam spillage and address inquiries from legislators.
VRA, the state-owned power generation company, initiated controlled spillage of the Akosombo Dam on September 15, 2023, due to increased inflows. Unfortunately, this led to the flooding of downstream communities, displacing thousands of people and submerging homes. In response, VRA allocated millions of Ghana cedis for relief efforts to alleviate the suffering of the affected individuals.
Beyond VRA’s efforts, both public and private entities, as well as individuals, have made substantial contributions of relief items. Some media outlets are still actively seeking support for the victims.
VRA recently announced the conclusion of the spillage after monitoring revealed a significant reduction in inflows into the dam.
Addressing Parliament, Minister for Energy Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh assured that his ministry would provide necessary accountability to the citizens. Despite the complexity of the situation, he pledged to inform Parliament about VRA’s actions and their response activities, emphasizing the national importance of addressing this emergency.
