The United Kingdom continues to be a top study destination for Ghanaian students pursuing education abroad, the British Council has announced.

Madam Joyce Oduro, Exams Director for the West Cluster at the British Council, attributed the trend to the high quality of training and strong support systems available to international students in the UK. She made the remarks at this year’s British Council UK Universities Open Day held in Accra on Wednesday.

The event attracted senior high school students, university undergraduates, working professionals, parents and guardians interested in exploring undergraduate and postgraduate opportunities in the UK.

The UK Universities Open Day, hosted annually by the British Council, provides a platform for prospective students and families to interact directly with representatives of UK institutions, learn about application procedures, explore scholarship opportunities and gain insights into living and studying in the United Kingdom.

Representatives from about 15 universities participated in the fair, including Aston University, Anglia Ruskin University, University of East Anglia, London Metropolitan University and Newcastle University.

Young Population

Madam Oduro noted that Ghana’s youthful and dynamic population makes access to quality education and skills training critical to national development.

She explained that through its programmes, the British Council continues to support young Ghanaians in acquiring the skills, networks and confidence required to succeed locally and globally.

“Simply put, when Ghana’s learners and educators succeed, the benefits ripple far beyond classrooms — into communities and the economy as a whole,” she stated.

Commitment

Country Director of the British Council, Nii Doodo Dodoo, reaffirmed the organisation’s belief in the potential of Ghanaian youth to make a global impact.

He said the Open Day reflects the Council’s commitment to strengthening educational partnerships and expanding access to world-class education for students in Ghana and across the region.

Mr Dodoo added that the UK remains one of the world’s most sought-after study destinations due to its academic excellence, research strength, diversity and strong graduate employability outcomes.

Guidance

Participants also received presentations from officials of the International English Language Testing System and the Chevening Scholarship, who outlined available pathways and funding opportunities for prospective students.
