The Ghana Railway Company Limited has begun the full passenger operation on the Accra-Nsawam rails after it was temporarily halted because of activities of encroachers.
The Railways authorities since last week have evicted traders and hawkers plying trade at unapproved areas on the rail lines.
So far, they have demolished the illegal structures erected on the pavements and other unapproved areas.
The decongestion exercise is part of the railway redevelopment project earmarked by the government and also to pave way for preparation towards the reopening of the Railway Network linking the Nsawam to Accra.
The activities of the encroachers, who included sand winners, had compromised the structural integrity of the existing facility, leaving the Ghana Railways Company Limited (GRCL) with no option but to reconstruct new ones.
Some of the angry traders who spoke to DAILY GUIDE expressed that the authorities have not given them enough time to park their things.
The 40-kilometer rail line project estimated at GH¢15 million is being undertaken to improve transportation speed and safety.
The line has served as a means of transportation for residents of Nsawam traveling to the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra.
Activities on the line ceased in October 2017 when a Tema-Accra-bound train derailed at Tesano.
The accident left dozens of passengers injured, resulting in the suspension of rail transport to the capital city.
The 200 feet stretch (100 on both sides), which will accommodate both standard and narrow gauge trains, is expected to be completed by November this year.
Meanwhile, the government had engaged a South African railways company, Transnet, to supply about 24 coaches and 110 wagons to run the narrow gauge.
