Stephen Nana Amponsah
New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Stephen Nana Amponsah has outlined a development agenda aimed at transforming Koforidua into a centre of innovation and a major tourism destination in Ghana and Africa.
Mr Amponsah, who contested the NPP parliamentary primaries in 2015, has indicated his intention to seek the party’s parliamentary nomination again when nominations are opened.
He disclosed his plans while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a clean-up exercise he organised in the constituency on Monday.
Clear Economic Purpose
Mr Amponsah said his leadership, if given the opportunity, would be anchored on discipline, innovation, selflessness and the circular economy, with particular emphasis on investing in people.
According to him, developing human capacity is critical to building stronger communities and creating sustainable infrastructure.
He argued that Koforidua, as the Eastern Regional capital, needed a clearly defined economic identity around which investment, employment and development could be built.
Tourism, he said, presented one of the city’s strongest opportunities because of its landscape and other attributes.
Mr Amponsah said positioning Koforidua as a major tourism hub for Ghana and the wider African market could help create economic opportunities and give the city a distinctive development focus.
Education and Innovation
Education also features prominently in his proposed agenda.
Mr Amponsah expressed concern about gaps in the education sector and attributed some of the challenges confronting the country to the politicisation of important national development issues.
He said strengthening education would help equip residents, particularly young people, to think innovatively and create opportunities for themselves and the constituency.
“The best form of investment any leader can make is investment in the human being,” he said.
Mr Amponsah, who has a background in Political Science, Banking and Finance, and Cyber Security, said he intended to apply innovative approaches to constituency development if given the opportunity to lead.
He maintained that improving education, developing human capital and establishing a clear economic direction for Koforidua could help position the constituency for sustainable growth and greater investment.
