Ghanaian musician Black Sherif has revealed that the excitement of winning the prestigious Artiste of the Year award is short-lived, saying his attention quickly returns to making music and pursuing bigger ambitions.
The award-winning rapper, who has twice been crowned Artiste of the Year, said although the recognition brings a sense of fulfilment, the excitement usually reaches its peak on the night of the awards and fades by the following day.
Reflecting on the significance of winning the coveted prize twice, Black Sherif said he appreciates the achievement but does not allow it to distract him from the work ahead.
“It feels good. It feels fulfilling. The euphoria peaks that night. And the next day is just back to working,” he said.
Beyond the Awards
According to the “Kwaku the Traveller” hitmaker, he sometimes returns to his normal routine the following morning without dwelling on the fact that he has joined the relatively small group of Ghanaian musicians to have won the top award twice.
For Black Sherif, awards and other industry recognitions represent important milestones in his career rather than the ultimate measure of success.
Asked whether becoming Artiste of the Year had been a specific target, the musician indicated that his ambitions went beyond securing the award.
“I was working towards something beyond that,” he said.
His comments underline his focus on sustaining his musical career beyond the excitement and public attention that accompany major industry awards.
Black Sherif has established himself as one of Ghana’s prominent contemporary musicians, gaining recognition at home and internationally through his distinctive blend of hip-hop, highlife and other influences.
For the musician, however, the plaques and accolades are only part of the journey, with his attention returning to his craft once the celebrations are over.
