The Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi has run out of blood following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Information available to the Daily Statesman indicates that there is not a single pint of blood at the hospital’s blood bank.  Patients who urgently need blood depend on voluntary donation by their relatives for donation.

Emmanuel Essein, a senior staff of   the hospital, who confirmed this, said it will be extremely difficult to provide blood to save lives in  emergency situations should there  be any.   According to him, not less than 50 pints of blood are needed in store for emergencies.

Mr Essein cited social distancing as the cause of the shortage, saying voluntary donors are now afraid to gather at the facility or any designated point   to donate.

He however allayed the fear, assuring potential blood donors that the hospital has enough Personal Protective Equipment to guarantee their safety.
