Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana
Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has disclosed that he resigned from the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) about five months ago and no longer participates in its meetings.
The disclosure comes amid questions over his membership of the GoldBod Board and concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) about whether his roles at the central bank and GoldBod could create a conflict of interest.
“I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all,” Dr Asiama told journalists.
NPP Raised Concerns
Former Finance Minister and NPP MP for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, had raised concerns about the Governor’s membership of the GoldBod Board during a party press briefing on September 1.
The concerns centred on the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod, including the BoG’s involvement in financing gold purchases and reported losses associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Dr Asiama’s latest disclosure indicates that he had already resigned from the GoldBod Board several months before the NPP publicly raised the issue.
BoG Representation
The Governor also explained that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140) does not specifically require the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to personally serve on the GoldBod Board.
According to him, the law requires the central bank to be represented but allows another qualified BoG official to serve in place of the Governor.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he explained.
“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there.”
His explanation comes amid continuing public and political scrutiny of the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod, particularly the financing arrangements surrounding gold purchases under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Dr Asiama did not, however, indicate in the report who currently represents the Bank of Ghana on the GoldBod Board.
