The Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, has charged women in higher offices in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government to discharge their mandate creditably. This according to the second lady will serve as the appreciation of the party’s recognition of the the role of women and to prove the worth of women in political positions. She indicated that the party and the president have proven their confidence in women by electing and appointing a number of them to serve in diverse topmost positions in the party and government urging them not to let the party and the government down.
Conference
Mrs Bawumia made this assertion when addressing supporters and sympathisers of the party at the party’s first National Women’s Conference held in Takoradi.
The three-day all-women’s programme, which was apparently taken over by men, was meant to whip up the political enthusiasm of the women in the party and, more importantly, get them actively involved in the party’s organisation ahead of the 2020 electioneering period. The conference was attended by all 275 constituency and 16 regional women organisers of the party, their deputies, all female party executives at all levels, women groups, including female Members of Parliament (MPs), renowned female clergies and apolitical women groups. Others were women metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs), female political appointees from the governing party, female volunteer groups, among others. The well-attended conference was on the theme “NPP women on the move for victory 2020 and beyond.”
Retain NPP in power
The second lady further urged Ghanaians to retain the NPP in power in the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. This she says will ensure that the government will continue to initiate and implement good policies for the citizenry.
She stated that despite inheriting an economy in distress, the NPP administration has worked hard to turn things around, and Ghana is ready for economic take-off adding that it would be good for Ghanaians to give the government four more years to build on the solid foundation and initiate more socio-economic interventions to better the lives of everyone.
“If you acquire a building which has a weak foundation and you want to renovate it, the prudent thing to do is to make sure the foundation is solid before you build on it. That is exactly what Nana Addo is doing,” she said.
Demonstrated Commitment
Mrs. Bawumia further stated that the President has demonstrated that he is committed to fulfilling the promises he made to the people hence the need for him to be given four more years to execute his laudable policies.
“Government is delivering on the promises it made to the people of Ghana and addressing their plights. But our opponents sit on radio and television and say they have not seen anything. Why? Can’t they see that the Free SHS programme has taken effect, the planting for food and jobs, the one district one factory, one village, one dam are all ongoing. What about Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), the reduction in electricity tariffs and port duties. These and many more are the reasons the electorate should renew the mandate of the current government in 2020,” she said.
Appreciation
The National Women Organiser of the NPP, Kate Gyamfua, expressed her gratitude to the President for appointing more women to sensitive positions in the government.
She reiterated the call made by the second lady by admonishing the NPP women to play their respective roles effectively to ensure the party stays in power for long.
She assured the party that the women’s wing will continue to play its part effectively to ensure a resounding victory in 2020 and beyond.
