Drivers, who ply the Akyem Osenase to Akyem Akanteng road in the Lower West Akyem Municipality are calling on the government to consider their plight and come to their aid over the poor road network that links the two communities. The Akanteng-Osenase road is the only road that links the town to other places of the country.

According to the drivers, the inhabitants of Akyem Akanteng who fall ill especially during the rainy season sometimes lose their lives due to the unmotorable nature of the road which makes it impossible for any vehicle to be able to ply in such periods.

When the Evening Mail visited the community, we saw that portions of the the road leading to the community had flooded due to a rainfall the previous night. Attempts to even use motorcycles to negotiate our way through the muddy road was even a herculean task for the riders who opted to help us.

Speaking to us, some of the drivers said the situation is leading to loses of lives and food products since farmers in the community find it difficult to transport their farm produce to Osenase and onward transport to Asamankese and beyond.

According to a taxi driver who gave his name as Francis, the situation become worse when pregnant women are involved. “Last week, a pregnant woman gave birth in my car because of how the road impacts on the movement of the car which shakes passengers in the car to the spine.”

The Chief for Akyem Akanteng, Berima Appiah Darkwah in an interview with us stated that they have tried all they could to get authorities to put the road in shape but all efforts have proven futile. He said they have even pleaded with the Lower West Akyem Municipality to just grade the road for them but all of these pleas have fallen on dead ears albeit ‘heavy’ promises.

Berima Darkwah added that although they have lost confidence in the lofty promises made by the politicians in the area, they are still pleading with the government and the ministry of Roads and Highways to come to their aid since the road is having dire impact on their lives.
