Central Regional Minister Presenting award to a winner
Some eye care professionals who have excelled in their line of duty have been honoured to mark this year’s World Sight Day in Cape Coast. They include the Ophthalmologist of the year, Dr Seth Lartey of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Optometrist of the year, Dr Zakarea Al-Hassan Balure of Upper West Regional Hospital and Ophthalmic Nurse of the year Mr Isidore Badiel of Jirapa Hospital.
Others are Optician of the year, Mr. Joseph Ndego of Tamale Teaching Hospital with a special Eye Health Special Award going to Seeing is Believing/Standard Chartered.
They were honoured by Kog Kriationz Network, an Accra based Non-Governmental Organization and the Ghana Health Service.
Statistic has it that 222,000 people are blind in Ghana. Out of the figure, Cataract is the leading cause of blindness causing about 54.8 per cent of the blindness. Glaucoma follows with 19.4 per cent among other factors. As such, the GHS has put in place a policy to screen every child of School going age at the early stage in order to minimize issue of eye related cases.
The Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan, who was the Guest of Honour at this year’s event pledged his support to ensure that people have very good eye sight and clear vision in Ghana.
Mr. Eric Owusu Gyimah (Oyokodehye Kofi) the CEO of Kog Kriationz Network, in an interview reiterated their commitment to partner with GHS to recognize and reward more of Eye health professionals who have demostrated selfless and dedication towards avoidable blindness annually.
Kog Kriationz Network is an NGO with the main objective of eliminating avoidable blindness.
