Water Resource and Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah inspects the skips

As part of efforts to improve the sanitation situation in Accra, the Greater Accra Sustainable Sanitation and Livelihoods Improvement Project (GASSLIP) has presented 30 skips (waste containers) to various metropolitan and municipal assemblies in the capital.

The skips, which are valued to the tune of GHC780, 000, were presented to the assemblies to support in their waste collection and disposal towards the achievement of the Clean Accra Project.

Speaking at a brief ceremony during the handing over of the waste containers, the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, said the presentation of the containers to the assemblies had come at a very opportune time with the rainy season approaching.

She said the move falls in line with President Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision of making Accra a very clean city, adding that delinquency will not be tolerated in sanitation issues.

Clean-up exercise

The Water Resource and Sanitation Minister expressed satisfaction at the positive results that have been achieved following the clean-up exercise at Accra and Tema. She added that both places have not experienced any flooding during the recent rainfall.

Madam Dapaah further said that all the Regional Ministers have been directed to undertake massive clean-up activities in their respective regions to ensure cleanliness, so as to promote good health, especially in this period where the country is making efforts to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic.

She encouraged the media to intensify their public education with regards to dumping of refuse into drains and gutters with the onset of the rains.

In addition, the Minister appealed to Ghanaians to strictly observe to the hygiene protocols to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commitment

Receiving the donation, the Dean of the Chief Executives in Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), D A Nii Noi Adamuah, said the items would go a long way to support them in waste management in the various municipalities.

He said the bins will be distributed to the assemblies in the GAMA and will be placed at strategic locations within the city to enhance waste collection and transportation.

The Government of Ghana and African Development Bank (AfDB) sponsored the skips.
