Arrival of the Olympic team at the airport
The first contingent of the Ghana Olympic team that represented the country in the just-ended 2020 Olympic Games at Japan has arrived home.
Officials from the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ministry of Youth and Sports and some fans were present at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra to welcome the team home.
The Director General of National Sports Authority (NSA), Professor Patrick Twumasi, told the media that the team had raised the name of Ghana high, and quashed the long search for a medal.
He commended the government and supporters for the tremendous support that was given the Ghana contingent during the games.
Professor Twumasi said the Ghanaian contingent participated in about five disciplines, which were boxing, running, jumping, swimming and weightlifting.
Investment in sports
Professor Twumasi urged the President to continue to invest in sports.
According to him, the President’s efforts to increase infrastructural development and building of multi-purpose stadia across the regions, as well as construction of Astro Turf structures, are indication of government’s commitment to take sporting activities to a higher level.
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Ben Nunoo Mensah, lauded the athletes for a good work to lift the image of Ghana at the Olympics in Tokyo.
“We’ll soon be going to Paris to compete; we hope to win not just one bronze, but a number of medals, including a gold medal, so please let’s work together,” he said.
